Rio Grande Village Campground

The campground is a great place to photograph wildlife.

Simple: Javelina usually walk through the campground in the morning and evening. They feed on seedpods that fall from the mesquite trees. A photo from eye level is better than one from standing. A photo that fills the frame with the animals is better than lots of space and a small javelina. Remember that javelina are near-sighted, so don’t get too close and startle them. Avoid separating a mother from babies, as well.

Intermediate: Raven, turkey vulture, and greater roadrunner frequent the campground. Walk quietly around the campground with your camera and a lens in the 300mm range. When you spot a bird or critter, stand still. Let it get used to you and let it return to what it was doing. Then walk a little closer, stop, stand, and walk a little closer. The wildlife is habituated to people so will usually allow a close approach.
